The owners of Sidney’s Truth and Alibi Cannabis store wanted to be the first legal outlet in British Columbia to make home delivery of cannabis products under newly relaxed provincial rules.
So they carefully planned the delivery of a $ 45 CBD (cannabidiol) cream to a customer who uses it for his arthritis. The cream arrived promptly at 9 a.m. on Thursday. To mark the occasion, a worker used a 1938 BMW motorcycle with a sidecar to make the delivery.
“We wanted to do it with a bang,†co-owner Cindy Pendergast said with a laugh. “We wanted this to be the very first legal delivery of cannabis in British Columbia history. “
The prohibition-themed store on Beacon Avenue is owned by Pendergast, her son Zach Pendergast and her husband Brad Styles. It has 11 employees and is licensed by the province and the municipality.
Customers can order a delivery by phone or online from the store, which targets one or two deliveries per day. Pendergast expects staff to be able to walk to customers often, although the store may also switch to using a car or e-bike.
The goal is to have one hour deliveries to Sidney. The service will be available on the Saanich Peninsula for minimum orders of $ 30. Practices can be refined as the service unfolds.
Pendergast said some customers might not be physically able to make it to a store, while others might not want to leave their homes during a pandemic, or prefer the convenience of drop shipping.
Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth announced last month that legal cannabis operators in British Columbia would be allowed to deliver direct to buyers starting July 15.
The province aims to reduce the illegal cannabis market. Retail operators had said having a delivery option would help them be more competitive.
Delivery was also offered as early as Thursday at Clarity Cannabis stores in Greater Victoria, said one of its managers, Eric Sarno, who was at 603 Gorge Rd. Location East. Orders can be placed online only.
“We are delighted with it. It gives customers a different way to receive cannabis products and accessories, â€he said.
A delivery charge of $ 4.20 is waived for the first month, he said. “It’s just going to take a while for the word to come out.”
Trees Cannabis intends to offer delivery to Victoria and Nanaimo by mid-August, spokesman Alex Robb said.
