A Newport man who was found growing 4 cannabis plants in his apartment has been fined £ 186.

Police attended the address of Samuel Aridegbe, 33, on May 16, after officers already had a puff of cannabis as they drove to Hookes Way for further questions.

Seconds after opening the door, officers saw a dark room with bright light coming out. Cannabis was discovered to be cultivated inside the property, which led to the arrest of Aridegbe on suspicion of possession of a class B drug and of being involved in the production of a drug. Class B – 2 offenses he pleaded guilty to in court on Friday.

Defending Barry Arnett told the court it was not a fancy installation with plants on paint cans without ducts or wiring. The situation is believed to have been caused following the death of Aridegbe’s mother in June 2020 and then the loss of her job when the pandemic struck, turning into depression.

Mr Arnett said his client had since made arrangements and he was able to see his 4 children again every weekend, while still having a stable job in Lake.

Magistrates fined £ 186 and ordered Samuel Aridegbe to pay £ 85 in costs and a surcharge of £ 34 – a total of £ 305.
