California Poison Control Warns Against Holiday Marijuana Edibles

During the holiday season, the California Poison Control System (CPCS) reminds all adults to use caution when using or serving edible items containing cannabis to avoid accidental exposure to the poison.

To minimize the risk of accidental exposure to poison, treats such as cookies, candies, pastries or beverages containing cannabis should not be prepared or served when children or adolescents are present, as children may accidentally grab a laced holiday treat, according to CPCS.

“Children can be exposed to marijuana either by inhaling smoke or eating foods containing marijuana, ”said Dr. Cyrus Rangan, assistant medical director of the Los Angeles area CPCS education program. “Keep your home and car smoke-free, and keep food or beverages in their original containers locked up, out of the reach of young children and adolescents. “

Edibles can contain large amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the chemical that gets someone high, according to CPCS.

While adults usually present with dizziness, weakness, slurred speech and anxiety, sSymptoms in children can be more severe: ranging from drowsiness to difficulty breathing or even coma, according to the CPCS.

Emergency rooms and poison control centers have received numerous cases of young children who accidentally ate marijuana foods and had to be hospitalized due to the severity of their symptoms, according to the CPCS.

“Children and cannabis don’t mix well,” said Ragan. “Treat these products as you would alcoholic beverages – use caution and common sense. ”

Dr Rangan advises that if there is a chance that a child has accidentally consumed products containing marijuana, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 so that a trained specialist can answer specific questions and guide callers to an emergency center.
